Hindu minorities believe that the establishment of the Purnagiri Mata Mandir is linked to Lord Shiva and Mata Sati. Mata Sati married Lord Shiva without her father Daksha Prajapati’s consent.

Daksha Prajapati ji organized a yagya in which he invited all the gods and goddesses but did not invite Lord Shiva and Mata Sati. When Mata Sati found out about this, she felt very upset and angry.

Mata Sati expressed her desire to go to that yagya to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva explained a lot to Mata Sati and advised her not to go, but when Mata Sati did not agree, Lord Shiva gave her Permission to go. Sati mata attended as an uninvited guest and received no respect.

Mata Sati’s father Daksha Parjapati insulted her and Lord Shiva. Mata Sati was deeply hurt by Lord Shiva’s insult. In her anger, she jumped into the havan pit to end the yagya and sacrificed her life.

Seeing the burning body of Mama Sati, Lord Shiva came in anger and destroyed the havan, and taking Mata Sati’s body started roaming in the entire universe and started performing Tandava and destroying everything.

Then Lord Vishnu, to pacify this act of Lord Shiva, cut Mata Sati’s body into pieces with his Sudarsana Chakra. Wherever the pieces of Mata Sati’s body fell on the earth, they formed Shakti Peeths. In Tanakpur near Champawat, a part of Mata Sati’s navel fell, which led to the creation of Purnagiri Mata Shakti Peeth.
